Samsung has lowered its Galaxy store commission to an 80/20 split for games, showing increased generosity toward developers who distribute their games through its platform.

A New Era for Samsung Game Developers

Electronics powerhouse Samsung has recently heralded a significant change in its revenue sharing policy, aimed at increasing the earnings share for developers and publishers. This announcement comes ahead of this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC).

A Strategic Shift

Previously adhering to a 70/30 revenue split, retaining 30% of app earnings, Samsung has now shifted to a more generous 80/20 model for games on its Galaxy Store. This new policy also extends to games developed on the company’s cloud gaming platform, enabling users to stream games without downloading them.

Challenging Google

With this new model, Samsung appears to be challenging Google, which maintains a 70/30 split. It should be noted, however, that Google only charges 15% for the first million dollars of revenue a developer earns annually, escalating to 30% for earnings above that threshold.

A Potentially Global Impact

Though Samsung’s Galaxy Store plays a smaller role compared to Google’s Play Store, it comes pre-installed on Samsung phones and could serve millions of users worldwide. The 80/20 model could significantly benefit developers, even if the bulk of their sales come through the Play Store on Android devices. This new revenue sharing model will be effective from May 15, 2025.
