Baidu Strikes Back with Ernie 4.5 and X1: A Strategic AI Offensive

Baidu has introduced two new AI models, Ernie 4.5 and X1, challenging OpenAI and DeepSeek with their advanced performance and competitive pricing, as the Chinese tech giant aims to dominate amidst growing competition.
Baidu Advances in AI with Two New Models
In the fiercely competitive field of artificial intelligence (AI), Chinese tech titan Baidu has made a significant move by launching two new AI models, Ernie 4.5 and Ernie X1, aimed at competing with industry heavyweights such as DeepSeek and OpenAI.
Outperforming Rivals Across Multiple Benchmarks
Ernie 4.5 goes beyond just competing. Baidu claims this new multimodal foundational model, which integrates image, audio, and video capabilities, has outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-4 on several key benchmarks, including the well-known CCBench and OCRBench.
Meanwhile, the more cost-effective Ernie X1 model is said to match the performance of DeepSeek R1 at just half the cost.
Baidu Stands Out with Competitive Performance and Pricing
While Baidu has not disclosed specific benchmark results for Ernie X1, the company has piqued interest with its strategic ambiguity. The real performance of Ernie X1 remains a mystery, yet its API access cost is notably low, set at “2 yuan ($0.28 USD) per million input tokens and 8 yuan per million output tokens”.
Battling Intense Competition
As Chinese competitors like Alibaba, Tencent, and Bytedance leverage the open-source trend initiated by DeepSeek to attract professional users and consumers, Baidu seeks to enhance its market relevance in China with these innovations. With these strategic moves, Baidu solidifies its position as a formidable contender in the AI arena by offering competitively priced, high-performance models.
