Huawei’s Pura X: A Uniquely Designed Foldable Phone

A Fresh Face in the Foldable Smartphone Arena

While foldable smartphones like the Galaxy Z Flip and Pixel 9 Pro Fold have already made their mark, Huawei is shaking things up with the Pura X, a foldable phone that stands out with its unique design. At first glance, it may resemble the Galaxy Z Flip 7, but a closer look shows it’s significantly wider.

Impressive Technical Specifications

The Pura X not only impresses with its design but also with its specs. It features a 6.3-inch internal screen with a resolution of 2,120 X 1,320 and a refresh rate of 120Hz, while the external square screen measures 3.5 inches with a resolution of 980 X 980 and the same refresh rate. Photography-wise, the Pura X boasts a 50MP main lens, a 40MP ultra-wide, and an 8MP telephoto lens with a 3.5x optical zoom. The front camera offers a 10.7MP resolution. Performance-wise, its 12GB and 16GB RAM options make it competitive with tablets. Huawei has not specified which of its Kirin chips powers the phone, but it features a flagship-level SoC.

An Uncertain Future Outside China

Note that the Pura X does not run on Android but uses Huawei’s own HarmonyOS Next, featuring the new Harmony Intelligence AI assistant. Unfortunately, this innovative phone will not be readily available in the West. In China, the base model is priced at 7,499 RMB (about $1,038), and the collector’s edition starts at 8,999 RMB (about $1,245). Despite these challenges, the Pura X may inspire other foldable smartphone makers to adopt similar designs. There’s a chance even Apple may consider a wider design for the much-anticipated iPhone Flip. However, this design might be cumbersome for users with smaller hands who already struggle with larger phones.
