The competition in space is heating up as Starlink's rival is finally set to launch next week.

Amazon’s Project Kuiper Launches Into Action

Amazon, the e-commerce titan, has announced the upcoming launch of its first 27 satellites under the ambitious Project Kuiper. This significant initial step, set for next week, heralds the start of Amazon’s satellite internet initiative, aimed at competing with Elon Musk’s similar venture, Starlink.

Amazon Aims for the Stars

Amazon ultimately plans to deploy up to 3,200 satellites in low Earth orbit to establish a network providing high-speed, low-latency internet. “We have conducted extensive ground testing to prepare for this inaugural mission,” stated Rajeev Badyal, Vice President of Project Kuiper. The launch is scheduled from United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V launch site at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

A Formidable Rival for Starlink

Amazon’s Project Kuiper will rely on an orbital system of 3,200 LEO satellites, a formidable fleet though fewer than SpaceX’s over 7,000 Starlink satellites. Intense competition is expected between these two tech giants.

Project Kuiper’s Technological Offerings

Project Kuiper by Amazon isn’t just about launching satellites. It also plans to introduce several technological products on Earth, including a compact 7-inch square communication terminal weighing about 1 pound, capable of speeds up to 100Mbps. This terminal will directly compete with SpaceX’s Starlink Mini, launched last summer. Additionally, for residences and businesses, Amazon plans to offer larger antennas capable of 1 Gbps speeds.

The cost of these terminals is expected to be under $400, a price Amazon might subsidize to attract early adopters. As Rajeev Badyal highlighted, “no matter how the mission unfolds, this is just the beginning of our journey.”
