Watch the live celebration of Microsoft's 50th anniversary: stay updated with the latest AI developments as they happen, and take a nostalgic journey through the pivotal moments of Windows, Xbox, and the company’s most incredible milestones.

From Modest Beginnings to Global Fame

Fifty years ago, on April 4, 1975, the computer revolution was sparked inside a modest garage in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was there that two young visionaries, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, founded Microsoft, a company that would forever alter the global landscape.

Since then, Microsoft has heavily invested in AI, notably through its strategic partnership with OpenAI. The corporation is incorporating generative AI across all its flagship products via Copilot, an innovative intelligent assistant interface for Office, Azure, and Windows. With this move, Microsoft aims to redefine productivity and solidify its cloud dominance.

The Name that Shaped the Future

The intriguing name Microsoft was inspired by a Popular Electronics Magazine cover. The January 1975 issue featured the Altair 8800, equipped with an Intel 8080 processor, a 2MHz clock speed, 256 bytes of RAM, and an 8-inch floppy disk drive. Bill and Paul’s plan was simple: develop software for this computer. Microprocessors plus software equaled Microsoft (sometimes styled Micro-Soft).

The Logo that Defined an Era

The 1987 Microsoft logo, with its bold, slanted letters and distinctive cut in the ‘o’, became an icon of its ascent in the tech world. Simple yet dynamic, it reflected the ambitions of a rapidly growing company at the forefront of technological innovation.

Featured on landmark products like Windows 95 and Office, it became a symbol of the digital revolution of the 90s. More than just a logo, it represented an era where personal computing became mainstream.

Microsoft’s Journey: 50 Years Later

Fifty years on, Microsoft stands as a pivotal enterprise. Here are five key dates:

April 4, 1975 – The founding of Microsoft Bill Gates and Paul Allen establish Microsoft in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to develop a BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800.
November 20, 1985 – Launch of Windows 1.0 Microsoft enters the graphical user interface scene, beginning its vast dominance in the PC world.
March 13, 1986 – Initial Public Offering (IPO) Microsoft goes public; Bill Gates becomes an instant millionaire, soon to be billionaire.
August 15, 1995 – Launch of Windows 95 A global event: the operating system transforms personal computing with its user-friendly interface (and iconic Start menu).
October 26, 2012 – Launch of Surface and Windows 8 Microsoft evolves: becoming a hardware manufacturer and attempting to unify PC and tablet interfaces.

Microsoft’s Mobile Missteps

Microsoft’s mobile strategy remains one of the biggest flops in its history. Despite an auspicious start with Windows Mobile in the early 2000s, the company failed to keep pace with the modern smartphone era. The belated launch of Windows Phone in 2010 never managed to catch up with Apple and Android.

The acquisition of Nokia in 2014, costing over $7 billion, ended in a notable failure. Lacking a compelling app ecosystem and clear vision, Microsoft gradually abandoned its mobile ambitions, marking a significant setback for a market-leading giant.
