Spotify Considers AI Ads to Boost Premium Subscriptions

Spotify is considering the integration of AI-generated ads into its free version to encourage users to upgrade to premium by mildly irritating them.

AI-Generated Advertisements

If you’re a free user on Spotify, brace yourself for ads entirely crafted by AI. The New York Times reports a novel advertising approach on the platform, with Spotify planning to launch an “AI tool for brands in the US and Canada to create scripts and voiceovers” for ads.

A Solution for Businesses, Not Users

The goal is to streamline ad integration on Spotify, requiring less investment to reach listeners. Interestingly, Spotify is not addressing current issues in its advertising system or offering real added value to anyone except businesses looking to push their latest product.

Issues persist with sexually explicit ads and podcasts on the platform (according to Bloomberg), and there’s growing frustration over rising costs for a service that lacks features offered by competitors.

Spotify Must Increase User Value

Spotify lacks spatial audio and high-resolution streaming, features available on other streaming services like Apple Music, Tidal, or Qobuz. Musically, there’s little incentive for people to keep subscribing to Spotify. Rather than bombarding free subscribers with AI-generated ads, Spotify should focus on enhancing user value. After all, if everyone leaves, there’ll be no one left to advertise to.

Despite recording record profits in 2024, Spotify’s efforts, including a poorly executed Wrapped 2024, provide little hope for the quality of ads its AI tool might generate.
