iPhone Rush in the US Before Tariff Storm Hits

iPhone sales have surged as consumers rush to buy them before Trump's tariffs take effect, hoping to dodge potential economic fallout.
Surge in iPhone Sales in Response to New US Tariffs
According to anonymous Apple Store employees, the iPhone 16 and other current models are seeing a significant increase in interest and actual purchases following the impact of new US tariffs on Apple.
Growing Uncertainty Among Apple Staff and Customers
Apple Stores are reportedly experiencing holiday-level traffic, with many customers inquiring about potential price increases. There is “no clear guidance from the company on what will happen when the tariffs take effect”, leaving both staff and customers uncertain about the best course of action.
Apple Prepares for Short-Term Demand
According to Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, Apple is stockpiling current iPhones and rerouting those manufactured in India to meet short-term demands. Despite India facing only a 26% tariff compared to China’s 54%, Indian production is not sufficient to meet American demand.
A Tax Dilemma for Apple
Due to these tariffs, Apple is facing a 55% increase in manufacturing costs, formally known as the “bill of materials.” Apple is thus forced to choose between sacrificing profits, negotiating more favorable terms with suppliers, or significantly increasing prices to frustrate consumers.
As for the iPhone 17, expected in September, it is impossible to predict the consequences. Rumors suggest a price increase, but these were made before the current tariff regime. Without changes, we might see a substantial price increase.
