Japan Issues Formal Warning to Google

For the first time, Japan has taken unprecedented action by officially ordering Google to cease certain problematic practices, marking a significant shift in the regulation of foreign tech giants.

Japan Hits Hard Against Google

The Japanese Competition Commission took a bold step on Tuesday by imposing a formal ban against Google. The American company, accused of mandating the installation of its apps on Android smartphones sold in Japan, is now in the spotlight. This marks the first time a member of the **GAFAM** group — the American tech giants — has faced such a decision in the country.

Anticompetitive Practices Identified

Why this stern warning? According to Japanese authorities, since at least July 2020, Google has not only enforced the preinstallation of Google Play and Chrome but also their prominent placement on the home screen. This strategy has significantly hindered the market presence of other competing search engines in Japan’s smartphone sector. Saiko Nakajima, head of digital investigations at the commission, stated, “By binding manufacturers and telecom operators, Google has made it difficult to use other search engines on Android.” She added, “This behavior poses a real risk to fair competition and thus constitutes a violation of anti-monopoly laws.”

Strict Contracts with Manufacturers

The firm stance of the Japanese authorities is further explained by several factors:

Payment of a share of advertising revenue to manufacturers who strictly adhere to Google’s conditions (such as setting Chrome as the default and prohibiting the preinstallation of other engines).Agreements with at least six major manufacturers, which accounted for nearly 80% of the Japanese Android market as of last December.

The commission now demands that Google immediately cease all practices deemed anticompetitive and develop clear guidelines to comply with Japanese law.

International Reactions and Prospects

In response, Google Japan expressed deep regret over the decision, maintaining its commitment to “fair competition and respecting user choice.” The company argues that its partners freely choose its applications for their perceived quality.

This measure is part of a global trend. Following the United States and several European countries, Japan is now reinforcing its regulation against the sometimes hegemonic strategies of tech giants. Should Google ignore this order, it faces a **heavy fine**, highlighting Tokyo’s intent to foster a more open market for all digital players.
