Landline telephones are set to disappear soon, with a specific date already announced for their phase-out. This change marks a major shift in how households and businesses will communicate, signaling the end of a decades-old technology.

Tl;dr

  • France to phase out fixed-line phones by 2030.
  • Copper network replaced by fibre optic technology.
  • Over 9,000 towns affected in next five years.

A Century Ends: France’s Farewell to the Fixed-Line Phone

Few everyday items have shaped French domestic life as profoundly as the fixed-line telephone. Introduced in Nice back in 1913 and popularised during the boom of France Télécom in the 1980s, its familiar ring became a fixture for generations. Yet now, a profound change is underway: authorities have announced that this technology will be entirely phased out by 2030, drawing the curtain on more than a century of national history.

The Driving Forces Behind Change

What has prompted this shift? The Ministry of the Economy has been frank: « Le réseau national français a donc simplement décidé de mettre fin à cette technologie presque obsolète de nos jours ». The aging copper infrastructure—once at the cutting edge—no longer meets modern demands, whether for speed, stability or maintenance costs. Keeping it running is both expensive and inefficient. Against this backdrop, transitioning to fibre optic solutions appears not just logical but essential, with fibre already serving many urban centres.

Adapting to New Realities: What Options Remain?

As millions face this technological transition, staying reachable at home remains entirely feasible. Several alternatives will be available:

  • Fibre connections: Enabling high-quality fixed voice services.
  • Mobile devices or satellite solutions: Especially useful for those outside fibre coverage zones.
  • Orange-specific alternatives: Assessed on a case-by-case basis for unique situations.

Financially, consumers can expect an installation fee around €55 to activate a new fibre line. Standard monthly subscriptions are projected at roughly €22, with unlimited call packages approaching €44.

Navigating the Transition: Tools and Timeline

To ease confusion and help residents plan ahead, Orange has launched an interactive online map pinpointing communities where copper deactivation is underway. On this map, purple marks denote trial areas; orange highlights places soon affected; grey indicates locations where traditional landlines are already gone.

More than 9,000 municipalities, including prominent locales like Bordeaux, Marly-le-Roi, and Cassis, are slated for phased disconnection between 2026 and 2028. For now, residents still have approximately five years to prepare for what is, undeniably, an unprecedented technological turning point.

In short—even as nostalgia lingers—the switchover is both unavoidable and imminent. The countdown has begun; France is stepping decisively into its next communications era.
