An unexpected surge of feedback from its user base has led Discord, the popular American platform for instant messaging and VoIP, to reschedule the worldwide implementation of its updated age verification policy. Originally slated for a much earlier date, the platform’s new approach will not be rolled out globally until the second half of 2026. In the meantime, Discord continues to comply with specific national regulations that already require protections for minors.

Pioneering Privacy-Conscious Alternatives

Concerns about privacy have been front and center in this debate. Many users voiced anxiety over the possibility that submitting ID documents or sensitive information could erode their anonymity. In response, Discord is expanding its methods for verifying age: besides standard forms of identification, users will soon be able to confirm their age through bank cards or other alternative means. As co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy outlined in a recent post, those who fall within the less than 10% of users impacted by these checks will see multiple options “designed to know only your age—never your identity.”
