The video site now joins DirecTV, Sling TV, and Hulu in leveraging targeted ads on pause screens. Which other platforms might adopt this advertising strategy in the future?

Google Monetizes YouTube Pauses

Google has ingeniously turned YouTube video pauses into a revenue stream by integrating advertisements during these breaks, carving out a new niche for digital marketing.

Advertisers Embrace the Initiative

A YouTube communications officer reported that advertisers have overwhelmingly embraced this innovative advertising format since its rollout.

In April, Google’s Chief Business Officer Phillip Schindler announced the positive reception of this advertising concept among the commercial community.

Users Less Enthusiastic

However, YouTube viewers have not shared the same excitement. Numerous Reddit users have posted screenshots of the new pause-screen ads, voicing their discontent with these interruptions.

To say they are displeased would be an understatement.

A Common Practice in Streaming

Yet, the use of pause-screen ads is not new in the streaming industry. Companies like AT&T’s DirecTV and Hulu already display ads during paused screens on certain subscription plans.

Similarly, some Amazon products, such as Fire tablets, show ads on the lock screen. Last May, Amazon announced plans to expand its advertising spaces on home devices, according to the official Amazon blog.

It’s also noted that these new ads appear when pausing videos on the YouTube mobile app, as confirmed by various user reports on the platform.
