After Poland, Russian Drone Breaches Romanian Airspace: What These Incursions Reveal

Following a recent incident involving a Russian drone entering Polish airspace, Romania has now reported a similar violation. These repeated incursions raise concerns about regional security and the ongoing tensions surrounding Russian military activities near NATO borders.

TL;DR

  • Russian drone incursion heightens Romania’s border security alert.
  • International leaders condemn Moscow’s escalation and sovereignty breach.
  • NATO considers tougher sanctions and enhanced military support.

Mounting Tensions on Europe’s Eastern Edge

Concerns over regional stability have sharpened after a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace on September 13, 2025. The unmanned “Geran” model was tracked for nearly an hour by two Romanian F-16s as it strayed from its intended path during a Russian strike on Ukrainian infrastructure. Eventually, the drone returned to Ukrainian territory, without flying over inhabited areas or posing any immediate threat to civilians—a small consolation in an increasingly tense climate.

Just days before this latest incident, the region had already been rattled when no fewer than nineteen Russian drones breached Polish airspace—an unprecedented move since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine. Such events are fueling anxiety about the broader security landscape across Europe’s eastern frontiers.

International Outcry and Strategic Reactions

Inevitably, these developments have prompted swift and pointed reactions among European leaders. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s chief diplomat, called the drone incursion an “imprudent escalation,” warning of its potential to further destabilize the region. Meanwhile, Germany’s foreign minister reminded followers on X that this episode represents “another unacceptable violation of a close EU and NATO partner’s sovereignty.”

On Ukraine’s side, President Volodymyr Zelensky did not mince words: “The Russian military is testing Romania as well,” he cautioned, framing such maneuvers as part of a deliberate strategy to destabilize all neighboring countries.

NATO Fortifies Its Stance

In response to what is perceived as mounting provocation, NATO member states—including both Poland and now Romania—are ramping up their alert levels. During the recent incident, German Eurofighter Typhoons assisted Romanian F-16s in monitoring the intrusion. The Romanian foreign minister, Toiu Oana, plans to bring these sovereignty violations before the United Nations General Assembly.

Possible measures under discussion to counter Moscow include:

  • New economic sanctions targeting Russia
  • Enhanced anti-drone systems along eastern borders
  • Expanded military support for Ukraine and vulnerable allies

The Limits—and Leaks—of Western Pressure

Yet, while there is talk of tightening sanctions against Moscow, there remain notable loopholes. Despite sweeping European restrictions since 2022—most visibly on Russian oil—exceptions persist; both Hungary and Slovakia still import crude through the Droujba pipeline.

As diplomatic discussions intensify and security concerns escalate along Europe’s edge, one question lingers: just how far could this cycle between Moscow and its neighbors spiral? For now, each new incursion amplifies an already palpable sense of unease at the very borders of the European Union.
