OpenAI, Microsoft, and Salesforce have differing views on what constitutes an AI agent. Amid revolutionary promises and vague terminology, the industry struggles to agree on the true meaning of an "intelligent agent."

At the Heart of Debate: The Definition of AI Agents

The tech industry, including giants like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Salesforce, is abuzz with the rise of AI agents, touted as groundbreaking tools poised to revolutionize our work methods.

Prevailing Confusion

However, the question “What exactly are these AI agents?” remains unanswered, leading to a blurring of the terms “agent” and “agentic”, which creates confusion and frustration among consumers.

Ryan Salva, a top executive at Google, has criticized the overuse of the term “agent,” arguing that the industry’s almost irrational use of it only adds to the confusion.

Divergent Definitions

The confusion stems from each company’s unique approach to developing these agents. For instance, OpenAI views agents as automated systems that perform tasks independently for users, while Microsoft differentiates between agents and AI assistants by assigning specialized expertise to the former.

At Salesforce, the definition of an AI agent is broader, viewing them as systems capable of understanding and responding to customer inquiries autonomously. They categorize these agents into six types, highlighting the complexity and variability of these systems.

An Evolving Terminology

Like AI itself, AI agents are nebulous and continuously evolving concepts. Companies are beginning to release what they consider their initial agents—with varying capabilities—further contributing to the overall confusion.

This lack of a uniform definition of AI agents presents both an opportunity and a challenge. The ambiguity may foster flexibility in agent development to meet specific business needs, but it also risks leading to inaccuracies and frustrations when assessing the value and performance of projects. Given this dynamic, the industry is unlikely to settle on a single definition of “agent” anytime soon.
