Artificial intelligence is transforming NPCs in video games, sparking a debate between its technological promise and criticisms about their lack of humanity.
AI in Video Games: A Controversial Innovation
For several years, the rise of non-player characters (NPCs) controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) has become an inevitable trend in the video game industry. At CES 2025, tech giant NVIDIA announced that this technology is nearly at our doorstep. Game developers Krafton, creators of PUBG, revealed plans to use NVIDIA’s Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) to power AI companions who will assist and interact with players during gameplay. Additionally, Krafton is implementing ACE in their life simulation title InZOI to enhance character intelligence and object generation.
AI NPCs: A Disappointing Outcome
Despite some developers’ enthusiasm for incorporating AI into games, the final output of AI NPCs has drawn significant criticism. NVIDIA’s ACE, designed to craft entire conversations, simulate voices, and imbue NPCs with personality traits, has fallen short. An example is the game ZooPunk by TiGames, where a character named Buck, powered by NVIDIA ACE, speaks in a monotone robotic voice with a poorly executed rural accent.
A Lack of Humanity
Many commentators have pointed out the lack of engagement with these AI NPCs. They exhibit no joy, warmth, or humanity. Each AI character feels like a developer’s attempt to cut costs in the worst way possible, as if showing contempt for the audience through boring NPCs. Would you prefer reading text on-screen rather than conversing with unsettling robotic voices?
A Technology to Reorient
However, it’s important to note that not all of NVIDIA’s AI endeavors have been fruitless. Their DLSS technology has improved over the years, and the potential of multi-frame generation in DLSS 4 to enhance 4K and ray tracing performance in demanding games is intriguing. The company’s neural shader technology also shows promise, particularly its ability to apply realistic sheen to materials like silk or to suggest the subtle translucence seen in skin. While these are not major visual leaps, they could help enhance immersion.
AI, like any new technology, is a tool that can be wielded in many ways. When it comes to graphics and gameplay, its application is relevant. However, when it comes to communicating with NPCs, crafting their dialogues, and shaping their performances, it is crucial to value human effort over replacing it with lifeless AI. This does not seem like a step forward.
