Yoshua Bengio, winner of the 2024 VinFuture Grand Prize, warns of the risks posed by unregulated AI. He emphasizes the need for robust oversight to balance rapid advancements with societal safety, aiming for a more ethical and fair future.

Artificial Intelligence: A Double-Edged Revolution

Artificial Intelligence (AI), marked by breakthroughs like DeepSeek, is reshaping our world at an unprecedented pace. Yoshua Bengio, known as the “godfather of AI,” advocates for the regulation of AI to ensure its ethical and equitable use for everyone.

Ode to AI: Progress and Dilemmas

The rapid rise of AI has sparked an urgent wake-up call, illustrating that AI’s tangible advancements do not necessarily rely on massive capital investments. Bengio, a recipient of numerous international awards, urgently calls for regulation. “If open AI models like DeepSeek are fully distributed, terrorists could exploit them“, he warns.

On the Frontiers of Autonomy

AI is continuously evolving, becoming more autonomous. This exponential progress raises legitimate concerns about job losses and the loss of human control over these systems. “We do not want machines that compete with us“, Bengio points out.

Bridging the Gap Rather Than Widening It

In response to these challenges, Bengio calls for global negotiations. The benefits of creating advanced AI systems should be globally shared to balance the benefits and mitigate risks. Bengio strongly encourages more collaboration between major technological nations and emerging economies to bridge the AI gap. The achievement of the VinFuture Prize, an annual award honoring technological innovations, emerges as a commendable initiative to enhance global collaboration on AI. Bengio concludes: “We must do this in a way that does not create radical disruptions in the social fabric“.
