Since July 29, flights from both airlines have been halted, with Lufthansa extending its pause until August 21. What could be the implications of these extended suspensions?

Extended Flight Suspension for Air France and Transavia to Beirut

In light of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Air France and its subsidiary Transavia France have extended their flight suspension to Beirut until Wednesday, August 14. This suspension may be further extended, as flight resumption is contingent on periodic security assessments in the region.

Safety First: Air France’s Commitment

Air France emphasized in a statement that the “safety of its passengers and crew remains its top priority”. The airline also promises to implement commercial measures for affected customers.

Passengers booked on flights to or from Beirut before August 18, 2024, can reschedule or cancel their trips without any fees.

A Common Concern Among Airlines

The security situation in Lebanon and the broader Middle East has prompted not only Air France and Transavia but also several other airlines to suspend their flights to the Lebanese capital fearing further military escalation.

For example, Europe’s largest airline group, Lufthansa, has announced it will avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace until August 21, citing conflict risks. Like others before it, this carrier has also halted flights to several Middle Eastern cities including Tel Aviv, Tehran, Beirut, Amman, and Erbil.
