In 2024, a record 128 reports of illegal injections have alarmed the Medical Association. What steps will be taken to address this disturbing trend?

The Alarming Rise of Illegal Cosmetic Procedures in France

In 2024, the French Medical Association reported a troubling increase in illegal cosmetic procedures. From liposuction to botox injections, these unregulated activities are becoming more prevalent, often promoted by fake health professionals on social media.

A Risky Promotion Strategy

“It’s terrifying,” states Jean-Baptiste Andreoletti from the national union of reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery (SNCPRE).

These imposters use platforms like Instagram and TikTok to lure clients, demanding payment upfront and only revealing the location of the procedure at the last minute.

Significant Risks and Severe Consequences

The dangers of these procedures range from infections due to improper sterilization to more severe complications like hemorrhages and even death. “The increase is worrying, with reports now every three days,” notes Claire Siret from the Medical Association.

To combat this illegal practice, authorities have regulated the sale of injectable hyaluronic acid, requiring a medical prescription. However, banned products like “Lemon Bottle,” which promises effortless fat dissolving, continue to surface on the market.

Necessary Measures to Protect Patients

Despite these measures, the number of reports continues to rise, reaching a record 128 in 2024. Several cases are currently under trial, with eight legal actions for illegal medical practice in January 2025 alone. “We must realize we are dealing with professional scammers. They don’t care about the victims; their only goal is to make money,” emphatically declares Jean-Baptiste Andreoletti.
