Amazon Considers Building Modular Mini Nuclear Reactors

The company has secured agreements in both Washington and Virginia states.
Amazon Dives into Nuclear Energy
Amazon, the e-commerce titan, has launched bold plans to develop small modular reactors (SMRs). These compact nuclear facilities are designed to be built faster and situated closer to power grids than traditional reactors.
Strategic Partnerships
Amazon has announced collaborations, including one with Energy Northwest in Washington, aiming to construct four SMRs that will initially produce about 320 megawatts, potentially scaling up to 960 megawatts. Additionally, a partnership with X-energy will bring advanced nuclear reactor designs to the Energy Northwest project. On the East Coast, Amazon is working with Dominion Energy to explore the feasibility of an SMR project near Dominion’s existing plant in Virginia, which could contribute an additional 300 megawatts to the area.
Impact on Jobs and the Environment
According to Amazon, these initiatives are expected to create new jobs—for instance, the collaboration with Energy Northwest is projected to generate 1,000 temporary construction jobs and around 100 permanent positions upon completion.
However, Amazon’s commitment to renewable energy has come under scrutiny. Despite the company’s announcement this summer that it had achieved its goal of matching its global energy use with renewable sources seven years ahead of its 2030 target, some employees and environmental experts have accused Amazon of “distorting the truth”. They argue that this claim hinges on heavy investments in solar and wind energy that, rather than being used solely by Amazon, are fed into the general power grid.
A Booming Sector
Amazon is not alone in its nuclear ventures. Tech giants like Microsoft and Google have also announced investments in the nuclear sector, signaling a growing trend among technology behemoths to seek alternative energy sources to power their expansive operations.
