Amazon Makes Last-Minute Bid to Acquire TikTok

Recent reports indicate that Amazon has made a last-minute bid to acquire TikTok US, marking a potentially significant deal. Here's what we know so far about this development.
Amazon Steps in to Rescue TikTok
A recent New York Times report uncovered an eleventh-hour bid by Amazon to acquire social media giant TikTok, just before the expiry of its latest ban reprieve on Saturday, April 5.
A Controversial Decision
For years, bipartisan support has existed for TikTok’s ban due to “national concerns” over its Chinese ownership. Yet, the move to enforce this ban has sparked an uproar in Washington, with politicians scrambling to keep the app operational. Amazon’s bid was made through a formal offer letter to Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
The Fate of TikTok in the U.S.
Under former President Biden, the ban was enacted in Spring 2024 and was set to commence this January. Even the Supreme Court has upheld the ban. President Trump, having previously initiated a ban during his first term, repeatedly stated his intent to save the app and is scheduled to meet White House officials about TikTok this week.
Current discussions aim to forge a potential deal involving several U.S. investors, including tech firm Oracle, to circumvent a formal sale. However, whether this deal will meet the ban’s conditions remains uncertain.
Amazon and TikTok: A Profitable Alliance?
It’s no surprise that Amazon, the e-commerce behemoth, is eyeing an investment in TikTok. The social app has evolved into an e-commerce platform where influencers recommend products to their followers, who can start shopping directly within the app via TikTok Shop.
Indeed, many influencers prompt their viewers to purchase recommended products on Amazon, earning a commission from those transactions. While Microsoft and Walmart made bids for the company in 2020 when the ban was first discussed, Amazon’s offer could be one of the most significant for the struggling app.
The possibility of TikTok being sold remains uncertain, as ByteDance, its Chinese parent company, has repeatedly stated that TikTok is not for sale.
