Amazon’s New Alexa Release Delayed by Technical Challenges

Amazon has delayed the release of its new Alexa, originally set for late 2024, due to technical issues and a lack of clear vision, prompting the company to reassess its goals for the voice assistant.
Amazon’s Alexa Update Delayed
Amazon planned to roll out an update for Alexa, its voice assistant, by late 2024. However, the e-commerce giant has now postponed this to next year. According to Bloomberg, the new version of Alexa is stuck in development, and Amazon has halted access to its beta phase, including the new “Let’s Chat” feature.
Issues with Advanced Language Models
The issue appears to lie with the large language models (LLMs) of the new Alexa. Designed to handle more complex user queries, Alexa is now more prone to failing at basic tasks that its predecessor managed with ease, such as setting timers or controlling smart lights, reports The Verge.
Initial Launch Planned for October
Amazon initially aimed to unveil its new Alexa version in October, but this has been extended until next year. Instead, on the originally slated October 17 reveal date, Amazon showcased its new Kindle lineup. In August, it was reported that the new Alexa would be powered by Anthropic’s AI Claude and come with a monthly subscription.
A Lack of Clear Vision for Alexa
Despite these hurdles, some employees told Bloomberg that beyond technical issues, the real problem is Amazon’s overloaded management and the absence of a compelling vision for an AI-driven Alexa. Thus, there is still a long road ahead to resolve these issues before the new Alexa version launches.
