Tragedy in Budapest
A 31-year-old American tourist and nurse from Oregon was found dead, her body concealed in a suitcase in a forest. Mackenzie Elizabeth Michalski had vanished after a night out in the bustling district of the Hungarian capital.
Suspect in Custody
The Hungarian authorities swiftly arrested a suspect. A 37-year-old Irish man was detained four days following the disappearance of the young woman.
Despite having no prior criminal record in Hungary, he confessed to the crime, claiming it was an accident. Investigators zeroed in on him after analyzing surveillance footage.
Circumstances of the Tragedy
Initial investigation suggests the suspect met his victim at a nightclub before taking her to his apartment where the tragedy occurred. The deceased was found in a suitcase hidden in a forest near Lake Balaton, over two hours from Budapest.
Suspicious internet searches were discovered on the suspect’s computer, including topics about body decomposition and the efficacy of local police.
A Devastated Family
Mackenzie’s parents, who were alerted to her disappearance, received the tragic news while en route to Budapest, hoping to bring their daughter home. “Over $40,000 (€37,000), raised for search efforts, will now cover funeral and travel expenses,” they stated. A vigil was held near the U.S. Embassy to honor the young woman.
