Android 16 to Revolutionize Phone Use in the Dark

Learn how the Android 16 update will transform smartphone usage in the dark, making the experience more enjoyable and intuitive. Here's what you need to know about this exciting innovation.
Reduced Eye Strain with Android 16’s New Feature
Often blamed for eye fatigue during nighttime smartphone use, Google may have crafted a solution. The tech giant recently unveiled a feature designed to alleviate this issue.
Introducing “Even Dimmer” to Replace “Extra Dim”
The first developer version of Android 16, released by Google, introduces several new features for Android users. Among these, a standout feature caught the attention of Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority. According to a recent post, Rahman revealed a feature named “Even Dimmer,” set to replace the current “Extra Dim” mode.
First spotted in one of the early preview versions of Android 15, “Even Dimmer” was tested by Android Authority in the second beta of Android 15. The feature, however, did not make it to the final version, although some users report seeing it on their devices running Android 16.
How Does “Even Dimmer” Work?
The main difference between “Extra Dim” and “Even Dimmer” lies in their activation and deactivation process. Both need to be enabled in settings, then in Accessibility. However, “Extra Dim” must be continuously toggled on and off via a quick settings tile. “Even Dimmer”, on the other hand, is controlled through the brightness bar, making its use more intuitive and preventing users from forgetting to activate or deactivate it.
Android 16 and Its Numerous Changes
Android 16 brings numerous changes, particularly regarding the frequency of updates per year. A recent study suggests that Google plans to split the major SDK packages between the second and fourth quarters of 2025. However, Google confirmed that the usual quarterly updates will continue as planned.
For now, only the Pixel 9 features the “Even Dimmer” functionality. We will have to wait for the next developer version to see if “Even Dimmer” will appear on other top Android phones.
