Anthropic's chatbot Claude can now browse the web, enhancing its capabilities and providing a richer, more comprehensive user experience.

Anthropic and Its Innovative Chatbot

After two decades in news journalism, I’ve witnessed many tech advancements, yet few compare to Anthropic’s latest revelation. The company recently upgraded its Claude 3.7 Sonnet chatbot, launched last February, introducing an industry-first hybrid reasoning model.

A Chatbot That “Thinks”

One key feature of Claude 3.7 is its ability to switch between two “thinking modes.” It can now instantly answer questions or methodically solve problems step-by-step. Additionally, its new web search capabilities enhance both efficiency and accuracy. Anthropic explains, “With web search, Claude accesses the latest events and information, increasing accuracy for tasks that benefit from current data”.

The Update to Claude 3.7

Prior to this update, Claude’s knowledge was capped at October 2024. Now, with web search functionality, it offers up-to-date, precise information on current events. When sourcing from the web, it also provides citations for verifying its responses.

Accessibility of the New Feature

In the US, paid users can access the web search feature through profile settings. Anthropic plans to extend this functionality to free users and other countries soon. With this move, Anthropic is catching up to OpenAI, which launched ChatGPT Search for its paid subscribers last fall and made it free for all users by early February.
