Anthropic’s Initiative Redefines Protected Music Standards

Anthropic is committed to partnering with music publishers to combat copyright infringement, aiming to protect artistic creations and ensure fair revenue distribution from their works.
Anthropic Nears Settlement with Music Industry
Anthropic, a trailblazer in artificial intelligence, has partially settled a legal dispute with several music publishers. This conflict began in October 2023 when publishers including Universal Music and ABKCO accused Anthropic of training its AI model, named Claude, on over 500 songs for which they hold copyrights.
Popular Songs at the Heart of the Dispute
The music in question includes popular tracks such as “Halo” by Beyoncé and “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5. The publishers claim that the AI Claude can reproduce, fully or partially, the lyrics of these songs.
Commitments Made by Anthropic
In a court-approved stipulation, Anthropic has committed to:
- Maintain its existing safeguards against reproducing, distributing, or displaying copyrighted material owned by the publishers.
- Implement these protections in the training of its future AI models.
Additionally, the company has vowed to swiftly address any copyright concerns and to provide detailed written responses outlining how and when they plan to resolve these issues.
An Ongoing Legal Matter
It should be noted that last Thursday’s agreement does not fully resolve the original disagreement between Anthropic and the music publishers. The publishers are still seeking an injunction to prevent Anthropic from using unauthorized song lyric copies to train its future AI models. A decision is expected in the coming months.
