Apple Develops Cutting-Edge Camera Technology

According to reports, Apple is currently developing a new camera technology; here's what we know so far.
Apple: Exciting Hardware Innovations on the Horizon
While we’ve grown accustomed to Apple focusing more on software updates, a recent report hints that the tech giant may be gearing up to unveil groundbreaking hardware features for its upcoming phones.
Major Camera Upgrades in the Works?
A recent Weibo post by “Digital Chat Station” suggests significant advancements are being tested. Mentioned technologies include a main camera with a variable aperture, a foldable display, and a miniaturized 3D ToF facial recognition component.
These enhancements, speculated to debut in the iPhone 18 Pro, could revolutionize depth of field control and zoom capabilities, significantly surpassing current Apple cameras.
Is Apple Playing Catch-Up?
However, Apple might not be the first to explore such features. Rumors indicate that the Multifold Periscope Zoom could be featured in the Galaxy S25 Slim, expected to be unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event in January. This technology involves an advanced camera system for smartphones, allowing multiple focal-length optical zoom without increasing the device’s thickness through a periscope-like arrangement of lenses and prisms that redirect light at a 90° angle to the sensor.
For instance, some smartphones with this technology can switch between 3x, 5x, and 10x optical zooms, offering greater flexibility for mobile photography. Brands like Huawei and OnePlus have already incorporated this technology into their flagship models. Huawei’s Pura 80 series and OnePlus 13 feature periscopic telephoto lenses that enhance light sensitivity while reducing the camera module size by 33%.
Patience is the Key
However, it’s important to remember that even though “Digital Chat Station” is a credible source, Apple working on new features does not guarantee their market release. We must wait for an official announcement from Apple to be certain.
