The trade war reignited by Trump poses a threat to Apple's global strategy and could lead to higher prices for its flagship products, despite the company's diversification efforts.

Trump’s Tariffs Impact Apple

Like many other companies, Apple is assessing the real impact of the tariffs imposed by President Trump on its global production chain. These “reciprocal tariffs,” effective April 2, affect several countries that are integral to the manufacturing or assembly of its products.

The Implications of Tariffs

China, where most of the 200 million iPhones sold annually are produced, faces a 54% tariff. This could significantly affect the pricing of the iPhone 17 Pro Max and other upcoming models. However, China is not the only country involved, and the iPhone is not the only product that might face repercussions from what President Trump calls “Liberation Day.”

Apple’s Supply Chain Diversification

Tim Cook has made significant efforts to diversify the company’s supply chain in recent years, shifting away from China towards countries like India and Vietnam. However, as Mark Gurman notes in his latest Power On newsletter, “Apple will still feel the impact on iPhones made in India, AirPods produced in Vietnam, and Macs manufactured elsewhere in Asia.“

Potential Price Consequences

According to a recent Reuters report, analysts from Rosenblatt Securities stated that Apple might increase the prices of iPhones and Apple Watches by 43%, iPads by 42%, and AirPods by 39% to offset the additional costs. To put this into perspective, the base model of the iPhone 16 could see its price rise from $799 to $1,142. Consequently, Apple’s products might become even more expensive, similar to previous price hikes in the UK following the economic upheaval caused by Brexit, suggesting a similar trend could occur in the US.
