Apple attributes the strong sales of the iPhone 16 largely to its advanced Artificial Intelligence system, a key feature that sets this new model apart.

Apple’s AI Tools, a Growth Lever

Last year, Apple focused on launching and expanding its artificial intelligence suite, Apple Intelligence, revealing its strategic importance for the tech giant, especially within its iPhone division.

Despite a record-breaking $124.3 billion in sales for the quarter ending December 29, iPhone revenue growth remained stable during the holiday season. iPhone sales accounted for $69.1 billion of Apple’s quarterly revenue, slightly down from $69.7 billion the previous year.

Impact of Apple Intelligence on iPhone Sales

This slowdown might have raised concerns, as the December quarter encompasses the end-of-year shopping season and marks the first full quarter of sales following the traditional fall iPhone launch. However, “markets where we deployed Apple Intelligence …. performed better on a yearly basis than those where we had not,” explained Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, during the earnings call.

Apple Intelligence was initially launched in October, only in American English. Users in other regions wanting to access the new features had to change their iPhone’s regional settings. It was in December that Apple introduced localized versions of Apple Intelligence in English in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Expansion of Apple Intelligence

According to Tim Cook, Apple Intelligence “opens a new exciting frontier and is already enhancing experiences on iPhone, iPad, and Mac”. Moreover, Apple plans to extend Apple Intelligence to more regions and add additional languages. By April, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese will join Apple Intelligence. Localized English versions will also be available in India and Singapore by then, along with a Chinese English version.

Furthermore, Apple is expected to launch a new version of its mid-range iPhone SE this spring. If Apple follows its usual SE launch pattern, the new iPhone will feature the same chip introduced last fall, enabling the iPhone SE 4 to run the same Apple Intelligence features available on iPhone 16 models.

Apple Intelligence, a Driver for the Future

Francisco Jeronimo, vice president of IDC EMEA’s Data and Analytics division, believes that Apple Intelligence will be crucial for Apple’s success this year. “Apple Intelligence has already played a significant role in this quarter’s results and is expected to remain a key driver for the future,” he wrote. In summary, expanding Apple Intelligence is a strategic priority for Apple, whose success will depend on its ability to innovate and adapt to the needs of its global user base.
