Apple Revolutionizes Strategy: AirPods Now Made in India

Apple has tasked Foxconn with assembling AirPods in India, strategically aiming to diversify its production outside China and leverage Indian economic incentives.
Apple Shifts AirPods Production to India
Apple, the tech titan, is set to initiate a new phase in its production in India. Starting next year, the company’s highly popular wireless headphones, AirPods, will be assembled in India, marking a shift from their usual manufacturing locations.
Foxconn Takes Charge of Assembly
The assembly will be conducted by Foxconn, Apple’s longstanding partner, at a facility near Hyderabad in Telangana State. Sources indicate that the facility has already begun trial production of the AirPods and that production is expected to ramp up quickly once full-scale manufacturing commences. This makes AirPods only the second major Apple product to be assembled in India, following the iPhone.
The Strategic Reasons Behind the Move
In 2023, Apple started discussions with Foxconn about assembling AirPods in India. Despite initial reluctance due to low profit margins, Foxconn agreed to embark on this venture to “strengthen its commitment” with Apple. But what drove this significant shift in their production strategy?
Apple’s decision to move AirPod assembly to India is partly in response to the Indian government’s offer of substantial financial incentives for companies that produce their headphones and smartwatches locally. Beyond economic benefits, this move is also part of Apple’s strategy to “reduce its dependency on China” amid escalating geopolitical tensions between China and the United States.
Only time will tell how this strategic shift will bear fruit and impact the global tech industry.
