Following a significant legal victory in a patent case, the Apple Watch has avoided a U.S. import ban, ensuring its continued availability in the American market.

A Patent Battle Victory for Apple

As 2023 ended and 2024 began, Apple faced a significant hurdle that stopped the sales of its Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the U.S. market. The blockage stemmed from a patent dispute with Masimo over a blood oxygen sensor, resulting in Apple having to remove certain features to comply with the ruling before the watches could return to the market.

The Threat of a Similar Scenario with AliveCor

A similar risk emerged with another company, AliveCor, which claimed that Apple had infringed on patents related to heart rate monitoring on some Apple Watch models. However, this multi-year legal conflict has now been resolved. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld a prior decision by the Patent Review Commission, finding all three of AliveCor’s patents to be unpatentable.

A Decision That Saves the Apple Watch

Apple breathed a sigh of relief. Heart rate monitoring is crucial for the Apple Watch, and altering or removing this feature would have dealt a more severe blow to the brand than the loss of blood oxygen monitoring capability during the Masimo case.

Apple stated, “We are grateful for the thorough review by the Court of Appeals in this matter”. On the other hand, AliveCor expressed a different view, stating they were “deeply disappointed by the court’s decisions” and hinted that the battle might not be over yet.

The tech giant is still feeling the impact of its earlier legal defeat. The Apple Watches sold in the U.S. post-ban, including the recently launched Apple Watch Series 10, lack the blood oxygen monitoring feature. Despite this recent victory, legal challenges over patents continue to be a thorn in Apple’s side, constantly requiring the company to prove the originality and legality of its innovations.
