Arm Revokes Qualcomm’s Chip Design License

In 2022, Arm filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm following its acquisition of Nuvia.
Escalating Conflict Between Arm and Qualcomm
The dispute between Arm, the British semiconductor giant, and Qualcomm, its former key partner, has intensified. Arm has revoked Qualcomm’s architecture license, which allowed the use of its intellectual property and standards in chip design, reports Bloomberg. It is worth noting that Apple has secured access to a crucial element of intellectual property, the Arm architecture, for its iPhone and Mac chips for the foreseeable future.
The Origin of the Dispute: Qualcomm’s Acquisition of Nuvia
In 2022, Qualcomm, backed by SoftBank Group, acquired Nuvia, another Arm licensee. According to Arm, also owned by SoftBank, Qualcomm failed to secure the necessary permissions to transfer Nuvia’s licenses, breaching their contract. As a result, Arm terminated Nuvia’s licenses, as detailed in its lawsuit.
Qualcomm was using Nuvia’s technology in chips designed for AI-equipped PCs from companies like Microsoft and HP. Arm now demands that Qualcomm stop using Nuvia’s technology and destroy any Arm-based technology developed prior to the acquisition.
Potential Consequences for Qualcomm
If no resolution is reached within the next 60 days, Qualcomm may be forced to halt sales of most of its chips, which account for $39 billion in revenue, according to Bloomberg. Qualcomm views Arm’s move as a tactic to threaten its business and extract higher royalties.
A Qualcomm spokesperson told Bloomberg and the Financial Times: “It’s typical of Arm – baseless threats designed to coerce a long-term partner, interfere with our high-performance CPUs, and elevate royalty rates regardless of the broad array of rights under our architecture license.” Qualcomm also accused Arm of trying to disrupt the legal process, called the grounds for license termination “utterly baseless,” and expressed confidence in asserting its “rights under its agreement with Arm.”
Major Stakes for the Tech Industry
This clash between two major players in the tech sector could have significant repercussions on the semiconductor industry. The outcome of this conflict is eagerly awaited by many industry stakeholders.
