At the AI Summit, Europe Aims to Become a Global AI Leader

At an artificial intelligence summit, the President of the European Commission reiterated Europe's goal to both regulate and expedite AI development, aiming to harness it as a catalyst for progress.
Europe as a Leader in Artificial Intelligence
The host of this year’s first AI summit invited the President of the European Commission to speak. Addressing an audience of presidents, ministers, entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and business leaders, she highlighted the dramatic progress in AI, noting it is now “approaching human reasoning”.
AI to Serve Humanity
At the previous summit, a priority was set to ensure AI is safe, aligned with our values, and primarily at the service of humanity. Europe now aims to lead the charge. According to the Commission President, integrating AI into daily life will boost competitiveness, enhance security, improve public health, and ensure more democratic access to information.
European Ambitions for AI
Despite repeated notions that Europe is behind the US and China in AI, the President believes otherwise. She asserts that not only is the race far from over, but it is “just beginning”. Europe aims for widespread adoption of AI across strategic sectors.
A Harmonized Legislative Framework for AI
In her speech, she emphasized the need for a harmonized legal framework to ensure safe, ethical, and beneficial development. Aligning with this vision, the EU has launched the European AI Champions Initiative, committing 200 billion euros to the sector. Additionally, she announced the EU’s support for the creation of the AI for Good Foundation, concluding that AI has the potential to be a boon for humanity, provided it benefits everyone.
