Auracast: Google Revolutionizes Bluetooth Audio with Android 16

Google is incorporating Auracast into Android 16, enabling Bluetooth devices to serve as public audio broadcasters. This significant advancement enhances accessibility, especially for hearing aid users.
Google Unveils Auracast
Google is set to roll out an Android update featuring Auracast, an advanced technology built on Bluetooth LE. This breakthrough allows users to create, join, and switch between public Bluetooth audio broadcasts using existing devices.
Enhanced Hearing Aid Support
Far from just a novelty, Google aims to enhance hearing aids with Auracast. “If a TV or streaming device supports Auracast, you can use your Android device to directly connect hearing aids to the source and listen to the broadcast,” the company states. Auracast will also accommodate personalized settings of hearing aids. On the Pixel 9, a simple QR code scan will instantly connect your hearing aids.
Third Beta of Android 16
The Auracast feature will be available on the Pixel 9 through the third beta of Android 16, launching today. Alongside Auracast, this software preview includes a new accessibility option to enhance text visibility and a “Local Network Protection” feature that increases control over app access to local network devices.
Awaiting the Final Version
While the final version of Android 16 is not yet available, the developer beta can be downloaded immediately on compatible devices. For those not ready to try the beta, Google notes that you can test Auracast with a Samsung Galaxy device running One UI 7 and compatible hearing aids from GN Hearing or Starkey.
