After 15 years in power, the "Iron Lady," a nickname given by her opponents, fled from the capital, Dhaka. The military commander promised to lift the curfew and reopen schools and businesses by Tuesday, August 6.

Sheikh Hasina’s Resignation Shakes Bangladesh’s Political Landscape

Change is in the air in Bangladesh following Sheikh Hasina’s departure from her 15-year tenure as Prime Minister on August 5, marking a historic moment amidst significant turmoil in the nation.

Curfew Lifted, Hopes for Calmer Governance Arise

Following Hasina’s resignation, the military announced the lifting of the curfew the next day and the reopening of schools and businesses in an effort to restore peace in the capital, Dhaka.

Concurrently, discussions to form an interim government involving major political parties have commenced.

Opposition’s Release, Global Calls for Peaceful Transition

The country’s president has ordered the release of the opposition leader and detained protesters.

This move has been applauded by the international community, including the European Union and the United Nations, both of which have urged for a “democratic transition” in Bangladesh. In response, the British Foreign Secretary has called for “calm and de-escalation.”

Heavy Human Toll, Nation Awaits Change

Despite promising political advances, the human cost remains high with fifty-six people killed during Monday’s riots. Students, key players in these protests, have specifically demanded an end to the employment quota system favoring families of independence war veterans.

Social demands turned political after the initial deaths in the suppressed protests starting July 16. Sajeeb Wazed, Hasina’s daughter, has strongly urged security forces to maintain order and uphold the Constitution. Hope now turns towards a new era for Bangladesh.
