Samsung and Tecno are reshaping smartphone photography by introducing innovative approaches to telephoto lens technology. Their latest advancements promise to enhance mobile zoom capabilities and set new standards for image quality in the competitive smartphone market.

TL;DR

  • Samsung and Largan develop advanced optical zoom for smartphones.
  • Tecno devices to debut these lens innovations first.
  • No short-term integration expected in the Galaxy S series.

Pioneering Optical Zoom: Samsung and Largan Break New Ground

In the dynamic arena of mobile photography, a collaboration between Samsung and Taiwanese optics specialist Largan is reshaping expectations. The two companies have teamed up to develop advanced camera modules, designed specifically for China’s rising smartphone manufacturer, Tecno. Known for models such as the Spark Slim and Phantom Ultimate G Fold, Tecno is set to become the first to showcase these next-generation imaging solutions.

The Technology: From Lab Concept to Market Reality

A standout among these innovations is the so-called Freeform Continuum Telephoto. This lens module delivers a seamless optical zoom ranging from 1x to 9x—effectively uniting standard and telephoto capabilities within a single component. Central to this leap is the application of “Alvarez lenses,” where two miniature lenses shift laterally, enabling continuous focal length changes without increasing the size of the camera bump. Such miniaturization has long been elusive for smartphones due to technical constraints.

Several factors explain this engineering challenge:

  • The precision needed for uninterrupted optical zoom.
  • The difficulty of integrating moving parts into ultra-slim phone designs.

Alongside the Freeform system, Tecno plans to introduce another module: the Dual-Mirror Reflect Telephoto. Utilizing parallel mirrors, it achieves effective zoom in minimal space—though with some compromise on light capture.

A Longstanding Hurdle Finally Addressed?

It’s worth noting that continuous optical zoom has been available on traditional cameras for decades, but bringing this feature into the smartphone form factor has proven notoriously difficult. Only a handful of models, notably Sony’s Xperia 1 series, have approached this level of performance—offering variable optical zoom but remaining largely confined to specific markets like Japan.

What’s Next for Galaxy Devices?

Despite speculation about imminent adoption in flagship devices such as the next Galaxy S26, current information suggests that Samsung fans will need patience. Major integration into the flagship line-up appears unlikely in the near future. Instead, rumors point toward developments like sensors up to 200 megapixels or variable apertures as more probable upgrades by early 2026. Given Tecno’s leading role and existing commercial agreements, it seems improbable that Samsung will leapfrog its partner in bringing these new camera technologies to consumers.

For now, while these breakthroughs hint at a transformative shift in smartphone photography, their widespread availability may still be several generations away.
