Biden Finalizes Prisoner Swap Before Exiting Presidential Race

Following months of intense, secret negotiations with Moscow, the former White House occupant has successfully brokered an agreement, expressing gratitude to European allies and Turkey for their bold decisions.
A Historic Prisoner Exchange Orchestrated by Biden
A recent prisoner swap has been labeled as “historic”. The exchange involved Russia, the United States, and several European countries.
This pivotal moment was the outcome of secret negotiations led personally by U.S. President Joe Biden, right up to an hour before he announced his withdrawal from the presidential campaign.
A Diplomatic Deadlock Finally Resolved
In this compromise, which marks the largest prisoner release deal since the end of the Cold War, no fewer than 26 individuals were exchanged. Among them were Paul Whelan, a former Marine, and Evan Gershkovich, a journalist from the Wall Street Journal.
This major operation required intense negotiations, notably involving Germany, where Chancellor Olaf Scholz had to make “significant concessions”.

The Key Role of the German Chancellor
These “significant concessions” particularly concerned the release of Vadim Krassikov. Convicted to life imprisonment in 2021 for the murder of a former Chechen separatist commander, he was thus able to return to Russia.
Initially, Germany had ruled out this concession, but due to the personal involvement of the president, the German chancellor agreed to reconsider.
A Diplomatic Victory for the Allies?
The resolution was indeed a diplomatic victory, highlighted by President Biden’s warm reception of the families of Gershkovich, Whelan, and other released nationals at the White House. According to Biden, this historic episode would not have been possible without the “bold and courageous decisions” made by his European allies and Turkey.
Thus, despite years of diplomatic tensions between Russia and the West, this prisoner exchange has underscored the strong involvement and commitment of politicians in crucial international negotiations.
