Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, aged 79, underwent emergency surgery overnight on December 9-10 and is currently in intensive care. What prompted this urgent operation?

Lula da Silva: A Successful Surgery

Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 79, underwent surgery overnight from December 9 to 10 and was subsequently moved to intensive care.

A Serious Domestic Accident

The surgery was necessitated by an “intracranial hemorrhage” resulting from a domestic accident on October 19. The left-wing president, who returned to power in 2023, fell in the bathroom, hitting the back of his head.

This incident previously forced him to cancel a trip to Russia for the BRICS summit and undergo a series of tests.

Reassuring Health Update

Following a headache, President Lula went to the Syrio-Lebanese Hospital’s Brasilia unit on Monday evening. Imaging revealed an intracranial hemorrhage. He was then transferred to the Sao Paulo unit, where he underwent a craniotomy to drain the hematoma.

“Currently, the president is doing well and is under observation in an intensive care unit,” the hospital stated in a release.

An updated health bulletin and a press conference by the medical team are scheduled for Tuesday.
