Ceasefire Agreement in Ukraine: Washington and Kiev Await Moscow’s Response

Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Kiev and Washington have reached a ceasefire agreement. The ball is now in Russia's court to play its part in restoring peace.
A Turning Point in the War: Ukraine Agrees to Ceasefire
After years of devastating conflict, Ukraine has agreed on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, to a 30-day ceasefire proposal made by the United States following talks in Saudi Arabia. This marks a potential turning point in the conflict that began in 2022, with Ukraine now declaring itself “ready for peace.”
Details of the Agreement
“Ukraine is ready to accept the American proposal for an immediate and temporary 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual consent of the parties and is contingent upon simultaneous acceptance and implementation by the Russian Federation.”
This joint statement opens the possibility for a peaceful horizon, contingent upon Russia’s agreement.
A Peace Proposal Awaiting Response
Despite Russia’s absence from these talks, Ukraine’s acceptance has been followed by an “immediate” resumption of military aid to Kyiv by Washington. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the proposal would be forwarded to Russia, adding, “The ball is now in their court.”
“Ukraine is ready for peace. Russia must now show whether it is ready to end the war or continue it,” responded President Volodymyr Zelensky, reflecting the global anticipation for Russia’s response.
The World Waits, Russia Remains Silent
Donald Trump announced he “will speak” to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, while Moscow has not “ruled out” contact with U.S. representatives “in the coming days.”
The situation remains uncertain. As of Wednesday morning, March 12, Russia had not yet responded to the ceasefire proposal. The Kremlin stated that it is up to Ukraine to demonstrate its readiness for peace. The key question now is when Russia will respond, and more importantly, what that response will be.
