Chatbots are evolving into search engines, sparking mixed opinions across the internet.

AI Chatbots: A Controversial Revolution

AI-based chatbots are increasingly infiltrating our daily lives, offering a novel way to access information. However, they have not been universally welcomed. A prominent critic, a linguistics professor from the University of Washington, has labeled them “a terrible technology for accessing information”.

SearchGPT: A Promising Yet Debated Alternative

Launched by OpenAI for premium users, SearchGPT aims to provide specific answers to user queries. This chatbot could compete with the likes of Google or Bing, providing real-time data on weather, news, sports, and stock markets. Yet, despite its convenience, not everyone is convinced that AI chatbot-based search engines are the answer.

Prof. Bender on the Limitations of AI Chatbots

Prof. Emily M. Bender has elaborated on why she believes Large Language Models (LLMs), which power chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude, are inadequate for research. She explained that LLMs are trained to generate word sequences that mimic natural language, but the chatbot does not truly understand what it is saying. “If someone uses an LLM as a substitute for research, and the output is accurate, it’s merely by chance,” Bender wrote.

An Ongoing Debate

Other voices also express skepticism about AI search engine chatbots. “Our lives will be more convenient and streamlined, but perhaps a bit less wonderful and full of awe, a bit less enlightened,” Matteo Wong wrote in The Atlantic. This critique highlights that relying on chatbots for internet searches might diminish our ability to discover, evaluate, interpret, and learn from a diverse array of knowledge sources.

Thus, despite the emergence of tools like SearchGPT, the debate over the efficacy and reliability of AI chatbots continues.
