OpenAI now offers free online access to research through ChatGPT, advancing as a detailed, source-integrated alternative to traditional search engines.

ChatGPT Challenges Google with Its New Open Access Search Feature

OpenAI has recently rolled out a significant update to ChatGPT, making its search feature freely accessible to all users, whether they are subscribers or not. Initially, this feature was only available to paying, account-holding users.

Smart and Accessible Searching

ChatGPT announced this update on its X platform, providing a link to its website. As promised, the search function is now available. For instance, when asked about “the age of the oldest tree,” it delivers a wealth of information and sources to back its answers. According to ChatGPT, the oldest individual tree is about 4800 years old, while a root system in Utah is around 18,000 years old.

Enhanced Search Tool

ChatGPT’s real strength lies in its ability to provide more detailed information than traditional search engines, supplementing answers with links to sources for verification. Simply clicking the “Search” button at the bottom of the chat window prompts ChatGPT to scour the web. However, be aware that the AI might require you to log in if it detects “suspicious activity,” such as repeatedly asking the same question to compare results.

A Google Alternative?

If you’re seeking a change from Google, there’s no need to default to Bing or DuckDuckGo. ChatGPT Search offers a fresh online search option, provided you’re comfortable with AI-generated results instead of traditional search methods.
