China Deploys Warplanes and Ships, Claims Taiwan as Its Territory

The military operation is viewed as a stern warning to the island's separatists, raising concerns within the international community, including Washington. What might be the next step in this crisis?
Threat Looms Over Taiwan
On Monday, October 14, 2024, China flexed its military muscle by deploying aircraft and ships around Taiwan, signaling a stern warning to the island’s “separatists,” according to Beijing.
Global Concerns Escalate
The international community, led by Washington, has voiced deep concerns over these developments. The U.S., Taiwan’s main ally and arms supplier, has criticized the maneuvers as “unjustified” and a potential trigger for escalation.
Breach of International Law
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te convened a security meeting, stating that these actions “contravene international law,” as noted by security chief Joseph Wu. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry slammed Beijing’s “irrational and provocative behavior,” while affirming the island’s readiness to defend its freedom and democracy.
Taiwan on High Alert
Amid rising tensions, Taiwan is on high alert. Peripheral islands like Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu have heightened their security status. Additionally, Taiwanese coast guards have spotted Chinese vessels in surrounding waters.
Despite the looming threat, some Taiwanese, like Taipei resident Benjamin Hsiao, remain unfazed, stating: “I’m not too panicked as these exercises are frequent… I’ve become somewhat numb to it.”
It’s important to remember that China views Taiwan as part of its territory, destined for eventual reunification, and has not ruled out the use of military force to achieve this.
