China Retaliates Against Trump’s Tariffs: Targets Chicken, Wheat, Corn

China has retaliated against Trump's tariffs, potentially setting the stage for a trade war.
Trump’s New Weapon: Tariffs
President Donald Trump has always shown a fighter’s instinct. His latest favorite tool in battle: tariffs. This strategic choice, however, has led to deteriorating trade relations between the U.S. and its partners.
China: A Targeted Trade Partner
The victims of this aggressive policy include America’s neighbors—Mexico and Canada—as well as the European Union, and particularly, China.
Last Monday, Trump escalated tensions by signing an order that increases tariffs on Chinese products by 20%.
Chain Reactions: China Strikes Back
In response to this trade assault, Beijing swiftly retaliated. China has mirrored the strategy by raising tariffs by 15% on essential goods like chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton, and by 10% on soybeans, pork, beef, fruits, and dairy products. These new tariffs will be effective after March 10th.
Impact on the Global Trade System
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce expressed its dismay at the situation, stating that the U.S. is “damaging the multilateral trading system” with its aggressive tariff policies.
Canada and the European Union have also responded, announcing they will apply reciprocal tariffs to the U.S. The trade standoff is clearly underway.
