Experts suggest that China is roughly a year behind the United States in developing large language models (LLMs), a gap that may widen following OpenAI's recent release of the o1 model. What challenges lie ahead?

China Lags Behind in Large Language Models

Experts indicate that China is approximately a year behind the United States in the development of large language models (LLM), a gap that may widen following the recent release of OpenAI’s model o1.

A Challenging Gap to Bridge

In an interview with the Post on Wednesday, Roey Tzezana of the Yuval Ne’eman Workshop for Science, Technology & Security at Tel Aviv University mentioned that China is six months to a year behind in text generation using LLMs.

He emphasized that while this gap might seem small, it is significant due to the rapid pace of artificial intelligence (AI) advancements. “Each year in the last two and a half years has brought major shifts in AI capabilities,” he stated.

Gap Confirmed by a Chinese Entrepreneur

Similarly, Li Dahai, co-founder and CEO of ModelBest, a Chinese AI startup, confirmed in an interview with Tencent News earlier this week that China trails the US by one to two years in online LLMs.

These assessments highlight the critical challenge for China to catch up. Despite these findings, China remains a significant player in the AI field and is likely to intensify efforts to close this gap.
