DeepSeek Limits Model Access Due to Overwhelming Server Demand

Due to overwhelming demand, DeepSeek has limited access to its API, causing market instability while OpenAI responds, signaling a new era of intense competition in artificial intelligence.
DeepSeek: A Victim of Its Own Success
The startup DeepSeek is grappling with the repercussions of its rapid success. A notification spotted by Bloomberg states that the company has had to temporarily restrict access to its Application Programming Interface (API) due to a server capacity shortage.
Limitation Measures
Facing these challenges, DeepSeek has taken drastic steps. “To prevent any potential impact on your operations, we have temporarily suspended API service recharges. Existing balances can still be used for calls. We appreciate your understanding!” the company announced. Additionally, DeepSeek revealed a price increase for its chat model, which will rise to $0.27 per million incoming tokens and $1.10 per million outgoing tokens starting February 8.
Impact on Financial Markets
Since launching its R1 model on January 20, DeepSeek has faced overwhelming demand for its services. Its emergence as a leading AI provider, and its ability to train R1 for a fraction of the cost OpenAI spent on developing its reasoning model o1, has sent American investors into a frenzy. Major tech stocks, including NVIDIA, saw a loss of $1 trillion in value the Monday following the surge of DeepSeek’s chatbot on the App Store.
Competitive Response
In response, OpenAI has launched its o3-mini model and a Deep Research feature similar to Google’s for ChatGPT, aiming to reaffirm its standing in the world of AI.
