Bluetooth 6.0: A Game-Changer in Device Localization
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (BSIG) has unveiled the latest iteration of its connectivity standard: Bluetooth 6.0. This version introduces a range of new features and enhancements, with the standout being “Channel Sounding.”
Channel Sounding: Precision That Meets Expectations
“Channel Sounding” is a new feature that surpasses old methods for calculating the distance between two Bluetooth devices. According to BSIG, it provides “significantly improved accuracy” and incorporates new security measures to minimize risks. This feature will make locating your items, including those with Bluetooth connectivity, easier and quicker. “Imagine Bluetooth mice, keyboards, and game controllers that can automatically switch between active and inactive states depending on their distance from a laptop,” stated Andrew Zignani, Senior Research Director at ABI Research.
Promising Applications for “Channel Sounding”
Beyond enhancing ‘Find My’ type apps on smartphones, “Channel Sounding” also paves the way for other Bluetooth-based applications such as digital keys for cars, doors, gates, and bicycles. It could even be configured to allow a lock to open only when an authorized device is within a specified distance. With over 5 billion Bluetooth devices worldwide, this precision enhancement is significant.
A Gradual Rollout
However, it will take some time before the first Bluetooth 6.0 compatible devices appear on the market. Companies keen on leveraging this updated connectivity technology are likely already testing the enhancements. Yet, it’s not clear if features like “Channel Sounding” can be unlocked through updates, or if devices need to be equipped with Bluetooth 6.0 from the start. If so, we might not see Bluetooth 6.0 compatible devices for at least a year, or perhaps six months if an enterprising company manages to integrate it swiftly into production.
