Donald Trump Plans “Iron Dome” Missile Shield to Protect the U.S.

Donald Trump has signed a new executive order to implement an "Iron Dome" defense system, a project that is expected to cost billions of dollars, raising questions about its implications for the country.
Donald Trump Initiates the American “Iron Dome” Project
On January 27, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to commence the construction of an “Iron Dome” missile defense system, a project likely to cost billions of dollars.
“The Most Technologically Advanced Missile Shield”
The executive order directs the immediate start of building the “Iron Dome” missile shield, touted by Trump as the most technologically advanced, during a meeting with Republican leaders in Florida.
A senior White House official, while on a flight back to Washington with the president, confirmed that the executive order aims to develop a comprehensive missile defense shield termed the “American Iron Dome” to protect the nation.
Inspired by Israel’s Defense System
The “Iron Dome” refers to Israel’s defense system which guards against missile, rocket, and drone attacks. Since its inception in 2011, the system, developed by the Israeli military company Rafael, has intercepted thousands of rockets with an approximate success rate of 90%.
Initially developed by Israel post-2006 Lebanon war, the U.S. later joined in enhancing the system with its defense expertise and substantial financial aid.
A System Limited to Short or Medium Range Attacks
Although previously mentioned during his campaign, it’s crucial to note, as experts highlight, that such missile defense systems are inherently designed to counter short to medium-range attacks, not to intercept intercontinental missiles that could target the U.S.
