Elon Musk has proposed a staggering $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI, the renowned artificial intelligence company.

Elon Musk Bids to Buy OpenAI

A recent Wall Street Journal report states Elon Musk has offered approximately $100 billion to acquire OpenAI.

He made this bid in conjunction with investors, including Ari Emanuel and Musk’s own AI company, xAI.

Sam Altman Rejects Musk’s Offer

As of this writing, OpenAI has not officially responded to the offer. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman retorted on X: “No thanks, but we’d consider buying Twitter for $9.74 billion if you’re interested.”

Musk responded sharply, calling Altman a “scammer” and continued his anti-Altman tirades on Twitter.

A Clash Between Tech Titans

The feud between two of the U.S.’s top AI advocates dates back to OpenAI’s founding in 2015 by Altman, Musk, and others. The discord began in earnest in 2018 when Musk left OpenAI’s board, ostensibly to avoid a conflict of interest.

Latter revelations suggested a more tumultuous exit, with Musk attempting to become CEO and merge OpenAI with Tesla.

The Future of OpenAI

OpenAI is transitioning from a non-profit to a for-profit entity. It remains to be seen how Musk’s bid will impact these plans.

Despite their differences, both Musk and Altman have the ear of President Trump, Musk with his DOGE plan, and Altman with his support for the Stargate program, involving data center construction across the U.S. The conflict shows no signs of abating soon.
