In a recent interview, European Digital Commissioner Thierry Breton urged X's leader to enhance site moderation to prevent the spread of harmful content. What steps will X take to comply with this demand?

European Commissioner Confronts Elon Musk

European Commissioner, Thierry Breton, has publicly challenged Elon Musk, the flamboyant billionaire behind various innovative enterprises, via an open letter. Musk was formally urged to enhance scrutiny over the spread of “hate-inciting and misinformation” content on his platform X (formerly Twitter).

The platform has previously faced backlash for enabling the dissemination of antisemitic and racist remarks, hosting pornographic material, and spreading false news.

Elon Musk’s Fiery and Provocative Response

Musk’s reply was unexpectedly audacious: he posted an image of Tom Cruise in “Tropic Thunder” screaming “Take a big step back and literally fuck your own face!” Musk added that he had resisted the urge to be so vulgar.

This response, laced with irony and defiance, typifies the billionaire’s confrontational stance against criticism.

To be honest, I really wanted to respond with this Tropic Thunder meme, but I would NEVER do something so rude & irresponsible! https://t.co/jL0GDW5QUx pic.twitter.com/XhUxCSGFNP

X CEO Claps Back

Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, also responded to Breton’s reprimands, arguing that Brussels is attempting to unduly extend its laws beyond the boundaries of the European Union.

She sees this move as not only overreaching but also insulting to Europeans, portraying it as underestimating their ability to discern information independently.

Sidestepping the European Institution

Further resistance has emerged from high-ranking European officials. According to the Financial Times, Breton’s actions were not endorsed by the European Commission, which claimed to be unaware of his initiative.

Meanwhile, an investigation into X’s compliance with the European Union’s Digital Services Act has been initiated, signaling the EU’s commitment to enforcing its laws and regulating the potentially harmful effects of digital platforms on society.
