Artificial intelligence is fueling a new wave of cyber-hate. Tools like Grok, which can generate manipulated images, are blurring the line between innovation and misuse.

Escalade de la cyberhaine : vers une IA complice ?

The alarming growth of online hatred, fueled by synthetic imagery, signals a looming and disturbing issue. Slander artists are increasingly exploiting advancements in artificial intelligence. Experts in online harassment specifically point to an AI, Grok, as a culprit.

Grok: A Platform with Troubling Consequences

This software, created by Elon Musk in 2023, was recently updated with a feature called Aurora, which allows the creation of eerily realistic images from simple text prompts. Earlier, less sophisticated versions stirred controversy by generating compromising images of protected public figures.

Regrettably, several users quickly “misused” this new feature to produce hateful, racist, or defamatory content. Among these manipulated images are football players and coaches depicted in racist scenarios.

The Concerns of Online Hate Combat Organizations

Thus, Signify, an organization collaborating with influential sports groups to detect online hate speech, has reported an increase in abuse reports since Grok’s latest update. According to Callum Hood from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, Grok financially enables the spread of hatred.

The concerns are compounded by the lack of restrictions on user requests to Grok. Users can easily bypass norms and policies by “jailbreaking”, meticulously describing the physical characteristics of individuals they wish to defame.

The Reaction of Sports Authorities

The Premier League and the English Football Association are taking the situation seriously. These sports organizations have established dedicated teams to combat this menace and support athletes targeted by these attacks. Additionally, they have implemented filters on their social media to block significant amounts of abuse.

The company X, responsible for Grok, has yet to respond to these allegations, undoubtedly prompting the community to increase vigilance against this new form of digital racism.
