First Mirage 2000 Jets Delivered to Ukraine: Impact of French Fighter Aircraft

Following Emmanuel Macron's announcement last June, Ukrainian pilots received training in France for operating Mirage jets. What will be the next step in this French-Ukrainian collaboration?
French Mirage 2000-5 Jets Head to Ukraine
In response to an announcement by President Emmanuel Macron last June, Ukraine has recently received its first Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets. Aimed at bolstering Ukrainian air defense against Russia, these jets were unveiled by French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu on Thursday, February 6.
Training in France for Ukrainian Pilots
Prior to the delivery of the jets, Ukrainian pilots underwent specialized training in France. “Today, after several months of training Ukrainian pilots in France, the first jets have arrived in Ukraine,” stated the minister, without specifying the exact number of aircraft delivered.
Mirage 2000-5: A Leading Fighter Jet
The Mirage 2000-5, designed by Dassault, is a distinguished combat aircraft. With a wingspan of 9.13 meters and a length of 14.65 meters, it serves the French Air Force in both national and international missions. This modernized version of the 2000-C features technology inspired by the Rafale, including:
- Replacement of analog instruments with screens.
- A new RDY radar capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously.
- A top speed of Mach 2.2, or 2717 km/h.
The aircraft is also valued for its availability, ease of maintenance, and upgradeability, as highlighted by Dassault on its website.
Increasing Demand for Air Defense Resources
Ukraine, facing constant bombardment targeting its energy infrastructure, is increasingly calling for enhanced air defense capabilities. Other countries have responded to this call, including Norway, which has delivered a batch of F-16 jets to Kiev.
