As influenza spreads across France, several regions are experiencing particularly high infection rates. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation as hospitals report an uptick in cases, highlighting the areas most severely affected by this seasonal outbreak.

TL;DR

  • Flu cases rise in multiple French regions this winter.
  • Vaccination and barrier measures strongly recommended.
  • High-risk groups urged to take extra precautions.

A Surge in Flu Cases Across France

As temperatures drop, the familiar shadow of the flu is once again stretching across France. The most recent update from Santé publique France, published on November 26, notes that several regions—including Île-de-France, Normandy, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine—have officially entered the pre-epidemic stage. In the overseas department of Mayotte, an even higher alert level has been declared as flu cases tick upward, especially among children.

The Lingering Impact of Last Year’s Epidemic

Last winter left a significant mark: the flu season began in December 2024 and dragged on for three months. During this time, nearly three million people sought medical attention for flu-like symptoms, with around 29,000 requiring hospitalization after emergency room visits. Excess deaths reached an estimated 17,600, attributed mainly to three strains: A(H1N1), A(H3N2), and B/Victoria. Given such numbers, public health officials are not mincing words about the need for heightened vigilance this season.

Protecting Those Most Vulnerable

Preventing another severe outbreak means focusing efforts on at-risk populations. Several factors explain why some groups are especially urged to take preventive steps:

  • Elderly individuals over 65 years old;
  • Anyone with chronic illness from six months of age;
  • Pregnant women, people with severe obesity (BMI ≥40), and residents of care facilities.

Additionally, vaccination campaigns target healthcare workers and close contacts of vulnerable persons to form a protective barrier around those most susceptible.

Vaccination Campaign: Expanded and Coordinated Efforts

This year’s vaccination drive launched early: starting in September in Mayotte and by mid-October in mainland France and other overseas territories. Until January 31, five trivalent vaccines will be available, including Flucelvax Trivalent®, Influvac Trivalent®, and Vaxigrip Trivalent® for both children (from six months) and adults; meanwhile, Efluelda® and Fluad® are specifically intended for seniors. Interestingly, authorities confirm that simultaneous vaccination against both the flu and COVID-19 remains possible—just not administered at the same site on the body.

Sustaining Barrier Measures Remains Crucial

Amid rising concerns about a potentially severe wave reminiscent of last year, health experts emphasize the importance of basic protective actions: wearing masks when symptoms appear, frequent handwashing, and regular ventilation of indoor spaces. Although early signs suggest a promising uptake in vaccinations compared to last year’s lukewarm response, it remains uncertain whether these efforts will suffice to curb the virus’s advance. For now, complacency could prove costly as winter settles in across France.
